The third and final episode of the Capability Building on Innovative Leadership for Legislative Staff (CBILLS) Program’s Thursday Talks Series highlights the importance of the Philippine seas in achieving the country’s sustainable development goals. Specifically, the lecture explores the interplay between the sustainable blue economy and food security, and how legislation and governance mechanisms can help harness the full potential of marine resources, ultimately contributing to the country’s food security and sustainability.
Dr. Rhodora Azanza from the UP Marine Science Institute and the National Academy of Science and Technology – Philippines provides an overview of the blue economy and examines how ocean resources support the country’s economy, food systems, and coastal livelihoods. Moreover, Ms. Ada Korina Manalo-Togonon from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources looks into the institutional mechanisms and policies in coastal resource management, including the underlying challenges and strategies for fisheries.
